ABSTRACT

Background of the study: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is remains as major public health problems. It is an umbrella term for several conditions including Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema. Objectives of the Study are to examine the effectiveness of Swiss ball training along with conventional physiotherapy in improving chest expansion and tolerance in patients with COPD.

Methodology: The study was designed as pre-test, post-test, control group, experimental group approach.  Group A (Control) and Group B (experimental). Treatment session consisted of 20 sessions (5 days in a week) for one month.  Pre- test evaluation was done on the day one session prior to treatment and post-test evaluation was done on the next day following the 20th session.  The chest expansion and exercise tolerance of the COPD patient had assessed using citrometry and 6-minute walk test.  The treatment duration for control group was15 minutes and for experimental group was 35 minutes.  For both group treatment had given for 5 days/week in single session for a period of one month.

Result: The study reported Swiss ball exercise along with conventional physiotherapy was effective in improving chest expansion and exercise tolerance in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Conclusion: Chest mobilization using breathing respiratory muscle exercise or functional training on Swiss ball shows clinical benefit in chronic lung disease especially COPD with lung hyperinflation or barrel shaped chest as they improve aerobic capacity, increase respired muscle strength and reduced dyspnea.
